Langer invited a small group of men in their 70s to spend a week in a converted monastery in New Hampshire but with one twist: the year inside was 1959.
Everything around them …the magazines, the TV shows, the décor, even the music reflected the world they had lived in twenty years earlier. They were told not to reminisce about the past, but to live as if it were the present.
When the week ended, the results were startling. The men showed measurable improvements in strength, posture, cognition, vision, and hearing. Even their faces looked younger in photos taken before and after.
Researchers concluded that the body had responded to the mind’s belief.
