Is Your Heart Older Than You Think? How To Turn It Back 20 Years
Heading to my Tennis Clinic Rain or Shine
Hi there,
Quick story for you this morning.
Cardiologists recently looked at more than 14,000 adults and calculated something called “heart age.” It’s a way of estimating how old your heart behaves based on things like blood pressure, cholesterol, meds, and lifestyle.
Here’s the part that made me sit up straight:
• Many midlife women had hearts that were 4–7 years “older” than their actual age.
• For some, that gap was even bigger.
If you’ve ever thought, “I feel older than I look on paper,” your heart might agree.
But this is not a doom story. It’s a “you can still change the ending” story.
The study that turned heart age back 20 years
Researchers in Texas took sedentary adults in midlife and gave them a structured cardio plan for two years.
Not a bootcamp. Not an extreme challenge. A clear, progressive plan that they actually followed.
Here’s what happened in the exercise group:
• Their VO₂ max (our gold-standard measure of fitness and a powerful predictor of longevity) improved by about 18%.
• The main pumping chamber of the heart became less stiff, which is a big deal for preventing heart failure as we age.
In plain English:
Two consistent years of the right cardio made their hearts behave about 20 years younger.
That’s why I care so much about how you move, not just how you look
What this looks like in your actual week
You do not need a lab, a mask, or fancy equipment to benefit from this.
Start with these three pieces:
1. Build your “base pace”
Three days a week, do 30 minutes of easy-to-moderate cardio:
• Brisk walk
• Treadmill
• Bike or elliptical
You should be able to talk in short sentences, not sing. This is your “I can do this for a while” pace. It quietly trains your heart to be more efficient.
2. Add one interval day
Once your base pace feels okay, you can layer in one gentle interval session:
1. Warm up for 5–10 minutes at your easy pace.
2. Go hard but safe for 4 minutes (breathing heavy, can say a few words).
3. Recover for 3 minutes at your easy pace.
4. Repeat that 4 + 3 pattern four times.
5. Cool down for 5–10 minutes.
If you have heart disease, chest pain, dizziness, or you’re brand new to exercise, talk with your doctor first. Safety before heroics.
3. Protect the engine with strength
Your heart rides on the back of your muscles.
Aim for two strength sessions per week (20–30 minutes):
• Push, pull, squat, hinge, carry, and core
• Bodyweight, bands, or weights
• Slow, controlled reps — no punishment
This simple trio — base cardio, one interval day, and basic strength — is shockingly powerful for heart age, energy, mood, and blood sugar.
This is the “science” side of Science & Soul.
How this fits inside The Ageless Reset
This is exactly why The Ageless Reset is not just a six-week challenge.
The six weeks are your on-ramp:
• We set up your strength routine for your joints, history, and goals.
• We build your walking base pace and introduce intervals slowly and safely.
• We pair it with protein-first nutrition, nervous system regulation, and morning rituals so your body can actually adapt.
Then the twelve months of support are where your heart really cashes in:
• We keep those walks, intervals, and strength sessions going when life gets messy.
• We adjust for travel, illness, hormones, holidays, and real life.
• You have a coach and a community, so you’re not rebuilding from zero every January.
Your heart doesn’t care about a six-week burst.
It cares about what you repeat over time.
